The 3’-glyceryl function can form a 3’-phosphoglyceraldehyde on the 3’-terminus of an oligonucleotide by an oxidation reaction with sodium periodate. The resulting aldehyde can be further oxidized to the corresponding carboxylic acid. Both carbonyl groups may be used for subsequent conjugation to amine-containing products.
