DOTMA and DOTAP are among the most widely used cationic lipids for gene transfection in vitro and in vivo. DOTMA and DOTAP carries a positive charge on the surface of liposomes which encapsulate siRNA, microRNAs, or oligonucleotides. DOTMA induces a positive charge on the liposomes and thus promotes efficient liposome- cell membrane interaction.
