N-hexanoyl-D-erythro-sphingosylphosphorylcholine can be used for the study of its effect on C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12)-induced cell migration using a transwell migration assay. This compound may also be used in liposomes to measure ostreolysin A binding to infer the effects of phosphatidylcholines on sphingomyelin/cholesterol interactions. N-hexanoyl-D-erythro-sphingosylphosphorylcholine is also employed as a component of lipid substrate mixture for substrate specificity studies of neutral sphingomyelinase from Trypanosoma brucei.
